Goosebumps break out over my skin, a sense of danger so strong I can taste it. Movement to my right catches my attention—a shadow against a stairwell—

I propel my body up, scrambling frantically for my weapon. Where the hell is my M4?

“Cory?”

Someone approaches from my left. My team, my responsibility—

I launch myself at the person. “Get down!”

I press the body tight to mine as I roll a full 360 degrees, ending with the other body beneath me. A smaller body. A softer body. A woman’s body.

I blink down at the woman beneath me. I’m not clearing insurgents out of buildings in Fallujah. I’m in a home in Savannah, Georgia, in the USA.

Maddy’s home.

“Fuck, Maddy, I’m sorry,” I gasp. “Did I hurt you?”

Maddy grips my forearms, her eyes wide on mine. She shakes her head.

“Thank God,” I mutter.

It’s then that I realize she’s wearing only a bathrobe—and that her bare legs are tangled with mine. An altogether different sensation snakes through my belly.

And then the pain punches into me, and I drop onto the carpet next to Maddy, my hand clutching at the bandage on my side.
