Cory forced his eyes open, but the world refused to settle. Everything swam, blurred shapes bleeding into one another, light too bright, shadows too deep.

Danger, danger!

A high-pitched buzz filled his ears, like the aftermath of an explosion, shrill and relentless. His pulse spiked, adrenaline flooding his system so fast it made his fingers twitch.

The air felt thick. Charged. He sucked in a breath and tasted it—metallic and sharp. Had there been a blast?

Goosebumps rippled across his skin.

Movement. To his right. A shadow near a stairwell—

He surged upright, panic snapping into action. His body moved before his mind could catch up, every instinct screaming for his weapon.

Where the hell is my M4?

“Cory?”

A voice—too close. Too exposed. Someone coming in from his left—

His team. His responsibility.

No time.

He launched. “Get down!”

He slammed into the body, driving them backward, wrapping tight and rolling—training taking over. The world spun with them until he ended with the other body pinned beneath him, his weight braced, ready to neutralize—

He froze.

This body was too small. Too soft.

Reality crashed in, jagged and disorienting as he blinked down at the woman beneath him. He wasn’t clearing insurgents out of buildings in Fallujah. He was in a home in Savannah, Georgia, in the USA.

Maddy’s home.

“Fuck, Maddy, I’m sorry,” he rasped, breath coming hard. “Did I hurt you?”

Her hands were on his forearms, gripping tight. Her eyes were wide, startled but clear.

She shook her head.

“Thank God,” he muttered, the words falling out with a shaky exhale.

It was then that he realized she wore only a bathrobe. The fabric had fallen open just enough that he could see the line of her collarbone, the smooth length of her throat. Her bare legs were tangled with his.

And then the pain hit.
