Sample Chapter

I glanced at Lauren as I eased the Audi onto the slick county road. The mist falling onto the windshield was turning to ice, just another unpredictable February night in Minnesota. A Subaru would’ve made more sense in weather like this, but no—Lauren had to have the Audi when she got that big offer from Strauss & Levine.

“I’ve got news,” I said, my heart beating faster. I didn’t mean to blurt it out like a kid, but after that long dinner with her lawyer friends, it just slipped. “I got an offer!” I couldn’t keep the excitement out of my voice. “From the Kansas City seed teams! The gateway to the pros, Babe!”

I grabbed her hand, the one resting on the console. “Brady—remember him from college? He’s there and says he can hook us up with a place to live. Can you believe it? Kansas City, Lauren! We’re almost there.”

But she pulled her hand away, a move I didn’t expect.

“I can’t move to Kansas City,” she said, her voice flat, like she was talking about the weather, not my future.

“What do you mean?” I asked, the breath catching in my throat.

“You didn’t even ask me,” she said. “You just assumed I’d go.”

I stared at her, tugging at the tie she insisted I wear. “You knew my goal was pro ball. You knew it when we met. You knew it when we got married. You knew moving was part of the deal.”

She shook her head. “What about my career? I’m on track to make junior partner in two years. I can’t just leave for one season.”

One season. That’s how little she believed in me.

Anger tightened my grip on the wheel. The tires skidded slightly on the ice, but I barely noticed. “You don’t think I’ll last more than a year?”

She said nothing, just stared out the window, and I realized she didn’t need to answer. Her silence said it all.

The back wheels skidded again. This time, the car lurched toward the trees lining the road. Lauren gasped as I fought for control.

“Slow down!” she shouted, her voice cutting through the tension, but it was too late.

The car whipped sideways, sliding across the ice, and I jerked the wheel, trying to steer us out of it. The trees loomed closer, and I felt the impact before I even saw it coming.

We were spinning, tumbling, and then everything went black.
